DE PERE — An International Cooking Knight on Sunday at St. Norbert College brought dozens of students together to sample different foods and raise awareness of world issues.

A variety of foods was prepared by the college's international and American students at Michels Hall Lounge. It was one of three events planned this week by the college and Beyond Borders, a student diversity group focusing on international causes, as part of International Education Week.

"We're trying to go beyond personal borders," said senior Adi Redzic, an organizer of the event and native of Montenegro. "Food is a good way to bring people together and introduce them to unique tastes."

St. Norbert College has degree-seeking international students from 28 countries. It also offers an English as a second language program, foreign exchange and study abroad programs and sponsors visits from international businesses, governments and academic groups.

A group of Japanese students served teriyaki chicken with a variety of sushi. Chopsticks were provided and highly encouraged.

"This is the first time to serve our food. It's very exciting," said Daiki Ito of Japan.

Adeline Vasquez of Lille, France, made a quiche of egg, meat and cheese.

"It's usually a dinner meal, and served with salad," Vasquez said. "In France, a meal helps us socialize. We realize food is a social moment, so people stay and talk."

Vasquez said she's been involved in raising awareness for humanitarian projects in France.

"We want to show that the U.S. is part of the globe, part of the world," Redzic said.
