Scouting report: Buccaneers running offense

Here is Press-Gazette reporter Pete Dougherty's scouting report on the Buccaneers' running offense: The most obvious difference from the 10-6 Bucs team last year to this yearís below-.500 team that has lost four of its last five games is the dip in quarterback Josh Freemanís numbers. But donít discount a run game that probably has contributed to Freemanís issues. Last year, LaGarrette Blount was one of the surprise stories in the NFL as an undrafted rookie who was picked up after Tennessee cut him in training camp and rushed for 1,007 yards on 5 yards per carry. Blount has missed two games because of a sprained knee and has been limited in his two games since returning; the Bucs are 1-3 since he was injured. Thatís not the only reason for their struggles, but itís part of it. When healthy heís a power back (6-0 and 247) who can churn out yards between the tackles. As it is, heís No. 28 in the league in rushing (434 yards) and is averaging 4.3 yards a carry. The Bucs rank No. 25 in the NFL in rushing yards after finishing last season No. 8. Blountís backup, Earnest Graham, is out for the season because of a torn Achilles' tendon. Packers cast-off Kregg Lumpkin (18 carries, 73 yards) now is the top backup.
