Clifton's return up in the air

Lost in all the injury news from yesterday's game was the fact that left tackle Chad Clifton, who has been out since Oct. 9 with a partially torn hamstring, doesn't appear likely to return any time soon -- if at all this season. Coach Mike McCarthy said today that Clifton is "not as close as I thought he was a couple weeks ago." The Packers have kept Clifton on the roster because they had hoped he might be able to return for the final month or so of the season, but McCarthy said Clifton would not be ready for the next game, a week from Sunday at New York. After that, there are four regular-season games left. Even if Clifton was able to return, there's no guarantee he would move back into the starting lineup. Despite some ups and downs, Marshall Newhouse has performed OK in his place. In fact, Newhouse was awarded one of the offensive game balls for his performance in Thursday's 27-15 win over the Detroit Lions. Here's the other injury news: * Both inside linebackers Desmond Bishop and A.J. Hawk, who sustained calf injuries against the Lions, have a decent chance of playing against the Giants, McCarthy said. * But right guard Josh Sitton (knee) probably won't be able to go against the Giants. McCarthy wouldn't say whether Evan Dietrich-Smith, who filled in yesterday when Sitton left the game, would get the start.
