Packers sign Harrell to active roster

Quarterback Graham Harrell was signed to the Packers' active roster to replace tight end Andrew Quarless, who was placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury Sunday against the New York Giants. The Packers signed guard Jake Vermiglio to fill Harrell's spot on the practice squad. Harrell, who was signed in May 2010,  spent the final three regular season games of last season and the playoffs on the Packers' active roster. The rest of his time in Green Bay has been spent on the practice squad, including the first 12 games this season. The contract of Packers backup quarterback Matt Flynn runs out at the end of this season and it's expected he will sign with another team for a chance to become a starter. Flynn has served as Aaron Rodgers' backup the past four seasons since being drafted in the seventh round in 2008. Harrell is being groomed to presumably become Rodgers' backup next season. Vermiglio (6-5, 329) is a rookie out of North Carolina State. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals as a non-drafted free agent on July 30 and was released Aug. 24.
