1972 Dolphins plan champagne toast after Packers lose

Former Miami Dolphins players Marv Fleming and Paul Warfield, who played on the only NFL team to complete a season undefeated in 1972, insisted in an interview with the Press-Gazette last week that members of that famous squad don’t drink champagne when the final unbeaten NFL team loses each season.   The Packers went 13-0 before stubbing their toe in Kansas City on Sunday in a 19-14 loss to the Chiefs.   But it sounds like some former Dolphins plan to celebrate with some bubbly, according to Foxsportsflorida.com, which reports that Dick Anderson and Nick Buoniconti started the ritual in 1991 of making a toast when the last undefeated team lost each season.   According to the report, the Redskins had started that season 11-0 before losing to Dallas. So Anderson, who lived four doors down from Buoniconti in Coral Gables, met his neighbor by the hedges with a champagne bottle in hand.   Buoniconti has moved to Key Biscayne, so this season's ritual will be delayed a few days, Foxsportsflorida.com reported.   “We said that we’ll get together later this week,” Anderson said. “We’ll toast champagne.”   Fleming, who played for the Packers’ first two Super Bowl championship teams, told the Press-Gazette last week: “If you’re going to drink (champagne), drink it in the closet. It was a great feat that we did. For it to last so long is cause for celebration. You celebrate in the closet. And we only did that one time. C’mon, we don’t do that anymore. Did it once and it took off. Everybody thinks we do it now.”   But after the Packers lost to the Chiefs, Warfield said Fleming told him he was planning to drink a glass of champagne Sunday night.   “People think we're grumpy old men,” said Larry Little, another former Dolphin. “We're happy old men . . . It's a great accomplishment, what we did. I'm still going to be able to walk around with my head held high knowing we are the only undefeated team.”
