McCarthy hopes Clifton can play vs. Lions

Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he is hoping tackle Chad Clifton, who has missed two months with hamstring and back injuries, will be able to play in the regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions Sunday.   McCarthy said the goal is for Clifton to go through practice this week and play in the regular-season finale.   McCarthy said he would like Clifton to get some game action partly so his veteran left tackle can feel comfortable heading into the playoffs.   Marshall Newhouse has filled in for Clifton since he went down in the Atlanta game in October.   In other injury news, McCarthy said right tackle Bryan Bulaga is close to being able to play this week and doctors feel good about his progress.   The news wasn’t so good for running back James Starks. McCarthy said Starks, who injured his right ankle against the Bears, will be challenged to practice on Wednesday. Starks has suffered injuries to both ankles this season, according to McCarthy. Other highlights from McCarthy's presser: * Would like to get Greg Jennings in practice and see how he does before moving forward. * Special teams played well vs. Bears and it started with kickers. Winning performance. * Lions QB Matthew Stafford has ability. Most impressive is long drives that he has guided. Those are things to build on. * Vic So'oto earned opportunity to play. He did some good things. * Frank Zombo is healthy. Special teams factored into decision to put him on inactive list. * Quality of play is important heading into playoffs. Momentum is part of that. Who plays best at end of year is who wins games. * We're preparing to win this football game vs. Lions. We want to sweep our division. * We don't sweep things under rug when we win games. We will talk about run defense on Wednesday. * Ryan Pickett is our best run defender. Yesterday was worst performance on run defense in our time here. It's really fundamentals. Pickett is going through testing. Getting real close. Don't know yet if he will be ready for Wednesday practice. * Offensive line played very well. O-line will receive game ball.
