Rodgers wouldn't mind QB coach with playing experience

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said on his ESPN Milwaukee radio show today that he hasn’t been told who would replace Tom Clements as the Packers quarterback coach. Clements was named offensive coordinator last week to replace the departed Joe Philbin, who was named head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Rodgers said he assumes Clements will take on full coordinator responsibilities, meaning he won’t retain his duties as quarterbacks coach, which he has performed since 2006. Rodgers said it saddens him that he likely won’t work with Clements as closely anymore. He said their friendship and closeness will have to take on a new dynamic with Clements in a new role. When asked by host Jason Wilde how he would feel about tight ends coach Ben McAdoo taking over as quarterbacks coach, which has been rumored, Rodgers replied: “Well, I think that’s an interesting conversation I hope I’m in the loop for because going into my eighth season, it will be interesting to see what direction (head coach Mike McCarthy) wants to go in.” Rodgers said it might be beneficial to bring in a former quarterback to help him with the transition to the middle portion of his NFL career. “I’m not sure what the dynamic would be with a coach who hasn’t coached the positon before,” Rodgers said of McAdoo. Rodgers added that McAdoo is a talented coach and he’s sure the transition would be smooth if McAdoo became the quarterbacks coach. The Packers reportedly blocked both Tampa Bay and Miami from interviewing McAdoo for their offensive coordinator positions. That could be an indication McAdoo is in line to get promoted to QB coach. When asked about former NFL quarterback Rich Gannon as a possibility for the job, Rodgers said: “We have very good relationship. I have a lot of respect for Rich.” Former NFL quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver was also mentioned as a possible candidate. “I know Billy was in the mix back in 2006,” said Rodgers. “We have a good relationship. I don’t know if he’s a candidate.” Rodgers said he’d definitely be OK with Tolliver as quarterbacks coach.
