Clements is McCarthy's man this time around

Five years ago Tom Clements, then the Packers quarterbacks coach, interviewed for the offensive coordinator position but lost out to Joe Philbin. This time around, there was no doubt in head coach Mike McCarthy’s mind that Clements was the man for the job after Philbin left to become coach of the Miami Dolphins. “It was an obvious choice,” said McCarthy on Monday morning. “This is something I thought was very natural. He’s definitely earned the opportunity and I really like the cohesiveness that we’ve been able to maintain with our offensive staff.” Clements said he never carried any resentment after being passed over for the job. “I kind of understood why it played out the way it did,” said Clements. “The year before (Jeff Jagodzinski) was the coordinator and he was more of an offensive line, run-game type of guy. Mike focused a little bit more on the passing game. He did focus on the run game as well but he was a little more pass-game oriented and having Joe replace Jags kept that dynamic in place so I understood that.” Clements said he has a strong relationship with McCarthy. “We’re going into our seventh year together,” he said. “We hadn’t known each other prior to the time we both came here to Green Bay. I think it’s a very good relationship. I think we look at offense the same, kind of see the game the same way, work together well on game day. So it’s a good relationship and very solid.”
