Packers re-sign Finley, 2 years, $15 million

The Green Bay Packers have re-signed tight end Jermichael Finley to a two-year deal for just under $15 million, ProFootballTalk first reported. Finley confirmed the deal via Twitter with this message: "It's TRUE! Thank you so much to the Packers organization, all of my fans, and my beautiful wife. Happy Bday. Let's GO Packers!! Back soon..." The deal keeps Finley from hitting the market and avoids a tricky situation with the franchise tag. Finley, who turns 25 next month, probably wouldn't have been happy with one-year deal in the first place. Secondly, there was the issue of whether he would get the tight end number ($5.4 million) or the wide receiver number ($9.4 million). The average of $7.5 million basically splits the difference, gives Finley the security of a multi-year deal and protects the Packers from a longer contract in case things don't work out (injury, inconsistent play). He made $1.2 million in base salary in 2011. Finley finished the year with 55 receptions, 767 yards and eight touchdowns. The touchdowns were the third-most amongst NFL tight ends. But a case of the drops plagued him throughout the season. The two-year deal puts Finley in line for a raise, if he plays well, when he's 26.
