Illinois DE Mercilus says he's no one-year wonder

INDIANAPOLIS Illinois defensive end Whitney Mercilus posted 16 sacks, 22.5 tackles for loss and 9 forced fumbles in 2011. He had 1 sack, 3 tackles for loss and 16 tackles in 2010. So, naturally, there were several questions at the NFL Combine on Saturday asking if he was a one-year wonder? I just was able to put everything together, Mercilus said. I was still learning the game as a redshirt sophomore and a redshirt freshman. Just last year, studying myself more, seeing what I do best and just put it all together for the 2011 season. I broke out that season. I think its a negative label because once you have it, you have it. Once youre able to produce like that and you put it all together, in your mind, you know youre able to repeat that success. Mercilus added that you cant fluke your way into 16 sacks. Mercilus is one of the top pass rushers in the draft. The Packers need help in that area. A child of Hatian immigrants, he described what makes him unique. I come off the line. I have a good first step, Mercilus said. Im able to come off the line pretty quickly. Definitely Im able to wear out players, too. I have a never-ending motor, and Im able to keep going until the fourth quarter until somebody is dog tired and just take advantage of them. Mercilus measured 6-3, 260 pounds. Said the Bears, Chargers and Bills have shown the most interest so far. The draft advisory board gave Mercilus a third-round grade, but most projections have him as a late first-round/early second-round selection.
