Clifton, Driver not due roster bonuses soon

The Packers aren't under much contractual time pressure to renegotiate or terminate the contracts of veterans Chad Clifton and Donald Driver. Both have roster bonuses for 2012, but neither is due until training camp at the earliest. Clifton, who is scheduled to make $5.5 million total this season, has $250,000 in roster bonuses, but they're contingent on him being on the 46-man game-day roster. That means he'll receive $15,625 for each game he suits up. The only money he's due in the offseason is a $250,000 bonus for taking part in the  Packers' offseason workout program, which doesn't start for another month. Driver, who is schedule to make $5 million total this season, is due $2.2 million in roster bonuses that are divided into two segments. The first is a $1.5 million bonus due the first day of training camp if he's on the Packers' roster. The second is a $43,750 bonus for each game he's on the active roster, or a total of $700,000 if he suits up every game. He's also due a $200,000 bonus if he takes part in the Packers' workout program. So the Packers probably will want to determine what to do with each player -- either release or negotiate a pay cut -- by the start of the offseason workout program. If the team wants to hedge its bets on either or both, it could have them take part in the offseason workout program without a huge financial cost, but the best guess is they'll do something with both before the workout program begins.
