Packers still considering defensive help

After agreeing to terms with veteran center Jeff Saturday this morning, the Green Bay Packers may turn their attention to some defensive help. According to multiple sources, the Packers remain interested in at least two defensive free agents: outside linebacker Manny Lawson and defensive end Dave Tollefson. A source said Lawson is "talking to a lot of teams," including the Packers. Lawson, a first-round round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2006, played last season for the Cincinnati Bengals. Though he has only 16 career sacks in six seasons, he could provide some help at the right outside linebacker position, a spot in which the Packers used a rotation of Erik Waldson, Frank Zombo and Brad Jones last season. A separate source said the Packers are "very interested" in Tollefson and a visit is expected next week following the NFL annual meetings (which run Monday through Wednesday in Palm Beach, Fla.). The Packers drafted Tollefson in the seventh round in 2006, but he never played for them. He spent his rookie season on the practice squad and practice-squad injured reserve because of a back injury and then wasn't re-signed in 2007. After a brief tenure with the Oakland Raiders, he found a home with the New York Giants, where he has played in 81 regular-season games the last five years. Last season, he had five sacks while playing in all 16 regular-season games, including two starts. At 6-foot-4 and 266 pounds, he would seemingly be an in-between defensive end/outside linebacker in the Packers' 3-4 defense. With the Giants, he played end in their 4-3 scheme.
