PALM BEACH, Fla. - The NFL went for big markets instead of nostalgia when it picked the Dallas Cowboys as the opening-night opponent for the Super Bowl champion New York Giants.

The league could have picked the Green Bay Packers to play the Giants on Sept. 5 if it wanted the season-opening game to feature the last two Super Bowl winners.

Instead, it opted for two of the biggest television markets for the showcase game on NBC, which said its Jan. 1 game between the Cowboys and Giants was its most-watched prime-time game ever. ...
