NFL meetings day 2: Thompson hits the road

PALM BEACH, Fla. — Every year on Tuesday at the NFL annual meetings, Packers general manager Ted Thompson has a smile on his face. That’s when he leaves, one day before the meetings conclude. He can't wait to get back out on the road and continue scouting for the draft. Though he wouldn’t say where he was headed, it’s likely he had a Pro Day to get to somewhere. “I’m a scout; I’m probably better served going and doing that,” Thompson said on his way out. “There’s a lot of smart people here, a lot smarter than me. So they can probably figure things out.” The owners — or in the Packers case, president Mark Murphy — will vote tomorrow on the myriad rule and by-law changes. “By this time, we’ve discussed all the things that our club would officially vote for, and Mark will say ‘yay’ or ‘nay’ on behalf of the club,” Thompson said. “Coach (Mike) McCarthy, myself, Russ Ball — all of us have had a hand in it. It’s not like I’m shirking my responsibilities.” The meetings conclude tomorrow with the NFC coaches breakfast, voting on the rules changes and a news conference by commissioner Roger Goodell. * In other news today, several NFL coaches got a sneak peak at the new game uniforms designed by Nike. They will be unveiled publicly on April 3. There are no significant changes expected in the Packers uniforms.
