NFL meetings day 2: Packers not in NFL opening game

PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Surprise. The Packers aren't in the NFL's kickoff game against the defending Super Bowl champs. Instead, the New York Giants will host an NFC East rival, the Dallas Cowboys, in the Sept. 5 NFL opener. There was strong speculation that the NFL would pit the last two Super Bowl champions against one another to open the 2012 season like it did when it sent the Saints to play the Packers at Lambeau Field to open the 2011 season. Maybe it's a good thing the Packers won't open the season against the Giants, who they will play at some point in 2012. Since the NFL began putting the defending champ in a prime-time game to open the season, the reigning Super Bowl winner has gone 8-0 in that game. This is only the second time that game has involved two teams from the same division. In 2008, the Giants beat the Redskins 16-7. There also had been indications that the league would not announce any of the 2012 schedule this week at the annual meetings. So far, the kickoff game has been the only game announced. For the Packers, it means coach Mike McCarthy can put together a more traditional training camp schedule, even if he does plan to eliminate most night practices.
