South Carolina CB moving up in first round

It's starting to look like South Carolina cornerback Stephon Gilmore might not even be on the board when the Packers select at No. 28 overall. The Packers will be looking hard at defensive players in the early rounds of this year's draft, and earlier in the offseason Gilmore was looking like a late first-round or early second-round type prospect, the kind of player who could be among the Packers' considerations at No. 28 overall. But Gilmore's combination of size (6-0 1/2, 190), speed (4.40 seconds at the NFL scouting combine) and now strong performance at his campus workout Wednesday suggests he could go as high as the top 20 picks. "Gilmore was fluid and smooth in all his mechanics and displayed terrific quickness breaking to the ball," said Tony Pauline, who is SI.com's expert on draft prospects. "There were several people who told me last night that Gilmore will compete to be the second cornerback selected in next month's draft after Morris Claiborne of LSU." Gilmore is battling with Alabama's Dre Kirkpatrick to be the second cornerback selected in the draft. South Carolina also has a safety, Antonio Allen (6-0 1/2, 210) who could be selected as high as the second round. Allen improved his 40 time slightly, from 4.58 seconds to the mid-4.5s, according to Pauline. Allen is more of a strong safety-type prospect than a free safety.
