Packers pre-draft roster analysis: Offensive line

Once again this April, Press-Gazette Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky will provide a pre-draft breakdown of the Packersí roster at each position heading into the April 26-28 NFL draft. Hereís the position schedule: Monday: Defensive line Tuesday: Linebackers Wednesday: Defensive backs Today: Offensive line Friday: Running backs Saturday: Receivers Sunday: Tight ends Monday: Quarterbacks Tuesday: Special teams Offensive line What they have: Chad Clifton (T), Bryan Bulaga (T), Marshall Newhouse (T), Derek Sherrod (T), Chris Campbell (T), Herb Taylor (T), T.J. Lang (G), Josh Sitton (G), Ray Dominguez (G), Jeff Saturday (C), Evan Dietrich-Smith (C/G), Sampson Genus (C). Position analysis: Signing Jeff Saturday to replace Scott Wells, who left in free agency, may be a one-year fix, but it was about the best the Packers could have done without having to draft, say, Wisconsinís Peter Konz in the first round. The Packers have other areas of need they have to fill with their top pick. Bulaga made huge strides from year one to year two, and they hope Newhouse can do the same after allowing 11Ĺ sacks last season. If Clifton canít play or if the Packers decide to release him, Newhouse would be the favorite to start over Derek Sherrod, although Sherrod should be recovered from his broken leg in time for the start of the season. Campbell is a promising prospect, while Taylor was picked up off the street late last season but didnít play. Lang had a solid first year as the starting left guard and while Sitton wasnít as good at right guard in 2011 as he was in 2010, heís still a borderline Pro Bowler. Dominguez was better at guard than at tackle but remains a project, as does Genus. Dietrich-Smith was a solid backup at all three inside spots. The future: The Packers drafted tackles (Sherrod and Bulaga) in the first round each of the last two years, so donít expect another high pick there. But you can never have enough good linemen, so expect there to be a couple in this draft class, possibly an eventual starting center somewhere in the middle rounds.
