Highlights of Ted Thompson's pre-draft (non)news conference

Packers GM Ted Thompson says he won’t know the status of Pro Bowl safety Nick Collins before next week’s draft. And that’s OK with him. “It’s a process, which it has been, and it’s a process that continues,” Thompson said during his annual pre-draft news conference today. “It’s more important to do it right than to do it fast.” When asked whether Collins’ situation and his uncertain return from neck fusion surgery last September makes it necessary to draft a safety, Thompson said: “We don’t feel like we have to target a particular position. That’s not what we do.” Of course, it’s always possible Thompson has made up his mind on whether he’ll take Collins back regardless of what the medical reports say. Thompson also spoke on: * what he's learned about the draft: “You can't predict it. You can worry yourself sick about what's going to happen.” * depth in this draft: “Most drafts wind up being about the same in terms of quality, how they impact the league or individual teams.” * the Packers’ backup quarterback situation with no experience behind Aaron Rodgers: “I'm fine with it, it's good.” * addressing needs on defense: “We won't do it intentionally. We don't draft that way. Draft for long-term investment not immediate or perceived need.”
