Green Bay Packers pre-draft breakdown: Tight ends always welcome

Once again this April, Press-Gazette Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky will provide a pre-draft breakdown of the Packersí roster at each position heading into the April 26-28 NFL draft.

Hereís the position schedule:

Monday: Defensive line

Tuesday: Linebackers

Wednesday: Defensive backs

Thursday: Offensive line

Friday: Running backs

Saturday: Receivers

Today: Tight ends

Monday: Quarterbacks

Tuesday: Special teams

Tight ends

What they have: Jermichael Finley, Andrew Quarless, Tom Crabtree, Ryan Taylor, D.J. Williams.

Position analysis: Like receiver, this is another deep position where the Packers surprisingly kept five players on the roster all season until Quarless shredded his knee on Dec. 4 against the Giants. Finley (55 catches, 767 yards and eight touchdowns in the regular season) didnít have the dominating year some projected, had problems with drops but still got a sizeable contract (two years, $15 million). Crabtree is as solid a blocker/special teamer as there is and has improved as a receiver. Taylor was the special teams standout as he was advertised as but has a ways to go on offense. So does Williams, who didnít see much playing time.

The future: Given how much coach Mike McCarthy likes tight ends, it would be wrong to rule out a draft addition. But it seems unlikely. Quarless looks like heíll start the season on the physically unable to perform list after tearing his ACL and sustaining other damage.
