Packers pre-draft roster analysis: Quarterbacks

Nov. 6, 2013

Once again this April, Press-Gazette Packers beat writer Rob Demovsky will provide a pre-draft breakdown of the Packers’ roster at each position heading into the April 26-28 NFL draft. Here’s the position schedule: Monday: Defensive line Tuesday: Linebackers Wednesday: Defensive backs Thursday: Offensive line Friday: Running backs Saturday: Receivers Sunday: Tight ends Today: Quarterbacks Tuesday: Special teams Quarterbacks What they have: Aaron Rodgers, Graham Harrell, Nick Hill. Position analysis: Losing Rodgers’ backup, Matt Flynn, in a free agency was a given, but it left the Packers without an experienced backup behind their MVP starter, Aaron Rodgers. Harrell has made steady improvements in his two training camps/preseasons with the Packers and should benefit greatly from this year’s offseason program. Still, he’s hardly a lock. Harrell wasn’t a top prospect coming out. He wasn’t even drafted, but he’s made steady improvement. He needs to make another big jump this summer in order for the Packers to be comfortable with him behind Rodgers. Hill was signed in January after playing in the Arena League. The future: Coach Mike McCarthy said he would like to have four quarterbacks in training camp, and a veteran backup doesn’t seem to be in the works. So look for GM Ted Thompson to draft a quarterback in the mid or late rounds.
