Packers officially release Collins

The Packers made it official this afternoon: They have released safety Nick Collins. It's worth noting that this was the Packers' decision and not Collins' decision. One of his agents, Dave Butz, said earlier today that he wasn't sure whether Collins will retire or pursue playing elsewhere. But it became obvious that the Packers didn't feel comfortable putting Collins back on the field after he underwent single fusion surgery on his neck following the herniated disc he sustained in Week 2 of last season at Carolina. “From the beginning of this process, we have taken our time and sought numerous medical opinions while maintaining consistent dialogue with Nick,” Packers general manager Ted Thompson said. “In the end, we were not comfortable clearing him to play again. As with all of our players, Nick is a member of our family and we thought of him that way as we came to this conclusion. "Nick is a part of our core, and this is a very difficult day for all Packers. Making this kind of decision is never easy, especially when it involves someone like Nick Collins. He has meant so much to the community, his teammates and the organization. He is a good man and will always be part of the Packers family.” Collins' other agent, Alan Herman, told the Press-Gazette last week that Collins was still in the process of gather second medical opinions after meeting with his surgeon, Dr. Frank Cammisa, nearly a month ago. The 28-year-old Collins had two years remaining on his contract. He was due to make a base salary of $3.45 million in 2012 and $4.35 million in 2013. He also had bonuses of $600,000 in each season.
