Packers draft tackle Andrew Datko

The Packers said good-bye to veteran tackle Chad Clifton earlier this week and moved to add depth on their offensive line by drafting Florida State left tackle Andrew Datko with the first of two seventh-round picks, No. 241 overall. Datko (6-6, 321) only started four games as a senior last season after injuring his shoulder and missed the final nine games. The Packers will likely start Marshall Newhouse at left tackle and Bryan Bulaga at right  tackle this season, with 2011 first-round draft pick Derek Sherrod making a comeback after suffering a broken leg last season. Datka had trouble with his left shoulder as a junior at Florida State and missed two games and eventually had offseason surgery. Pro Football Weekly lists him as being quick on his feet and technically sound. His character is rated highly, according to PFW, and he has a reputation for being a hard-worker. On the minus side, PFW says Datko lacks bulk, has limited power in his body, gets oumuscled at the point of attack and has average arm length. Packers coach Mike McCarthy spoke in favorable terms about Datko. "Heck of a football player," said McCarthy. "Clearly an injury situation, would have had a lot higher grade if it wasn't for his shoulder. Smart, tough, I know everybody is excited about him. "I think he'll be an excellent fit in our offensive line."
