Packers expect to sign all draft picks this week

One of the benefits of holding their rookie camp two weeks after the draft is that the Packers could have all eight of their draft picks under contract before it begins. Signings have begun to trickle in around the NFL, including one first-round pick (Seattle’s Bruce Irvin, who was drafted 15th). UPDATE: The Chargers have also signed their first-round pick, Melvin Ingram. Although the Packers haven’t announced any signings yet, a league source said Packers contract negotiator Russ Ball expects to have all eight draft picks signed before rookie minicamp starts on Friday. “These contracts are no brainers now,” said a source familiar with the negotiations. The source said the Packers aren’t even bothering with injury waivers so that unsigned players can participate in the rookie camp, which runs Friday through Sunday. Instead, they expect to have everyone, including first-round pick Nick Perry, signed before the first practice on Friday morning. In the past, most teams would struggle to get contracts done before training camps opened in late July. But the new collective bargaining agreement established a rookie wage scale in which salaries and bonuses are largely slotted, leaving little or no room for negotiations. First-round picks all do five year deals, while the rest of the players do four-year deals, per the new CBA.
