Southwest graduate Vanderlin hopes to impress

As a tryout player at the Green Bay Packers rookie orientation camp this weekend, former Green Bay Southwest standout Drew Vanderlin is facing long odds of making the team. But after a decorated career at Michigan Tech, this isnt a bad first job interview out of college. Thats true, Vanderlin said. I mean, going to Tech, it was a competitive conference. My goal obviously was the NFL. But never in a million years would I expect the first job interview to be with the hometown team and have a chance to play for a franchise like this. Vanderlin is one of 29 tryout players on the 59-man rookie orientation roster, which also includes draft picks, undrafted rookie free agents and returning first-year players. Of the tryout players, only three or four are expected to make it past this weekend. Vanderlin said he planned to take Packers coach Mike McCarthy's advice to heart after McCarthy told the rookies on Thursday to make the most of every rep in practice. I dont want to look back a week from now, a year from now, two years from now and say I could have did more, Vanderlin said. I want to go out there and leave it all on the field. Vanderlin is the first Southwest player to be a member of the Packers. - svenci@greenbaypressgazette.com and follow him on Twitter @scottvenci
