Packers dismiss Murphy-to-Stanford rumors as 'speculation'

The Green Bay Packers insisted on Monday there was no validity to a report that team president Mark Murphy might be a candidate to become the athletic director at Stanford University.

The San Francisco Chronicle named Murphy an "interesting name that has popped up in the rumor mill" for the job, which will officially open on June 15 when Bob Bowlsby leaves to become commissioner of the Big 12 conference.

"That's simply speculation," a Packers spokesman said on behalf of Murphy, who was traveling to NFL meetings in Atlanta. "There's no basis to it." ...
