OTA practice: May 22, 2012

Seen and heard by our reporters at today's open Green Bay Packers practice at Ray Nitschke Field: -- No surprise but RB Alex Green, TE Andrew Quarless and T Derek Sherrod aren't practicing. Neither are FB Jon Hoese and G Jaymes Brooks. DT Mike Daniels also isn't practicing. There was some thought he would be cleared for this. He had shoulder surgery in January. S Charlie Peprah also is a no-go. Add LB Frank Zombo to the list of those not going. He really needs a healthy spring/summer. Sherrod dressed in Packers garb but just observing. Wearing brace on right leg. CB Charles Woodson also not practicing. -- With John Kuhn also out, undrafted rookie Nic Cooper of Winston-Salem State got the first rep at FB. Not many UDFAs get No. 1 reps. -- So the Packers have found their new ROLB. It's Clay Matthews. Rookie Nick Perry is playing LOLB. -- First look at the nickel defense had BJ Raji and Jerel Worthy up front. Morgan Burnett and MD Jennings are the safeties so rookie Jerron McMillian isn't being handed a job right away. -- MD Jennings will have something to say about the starting safety job. He picked off Aaron Rodgers in team blitz drill. Anthony Levine got brief turn with No. 1 defense at safety. Sam Shields intercepted Rodgers with over-the-shoulder catch on bomb to Jordy Nelson, not a common play by a DB. -- Rodgers hit Nelson deep in perfect stride during 7-on-7 drill. Pretty play. -- Fielding punts: Randall Cobb, Shaky Smithson, Tramon Williams, Diondre Borel, Jordy Nelson. -- Tim Masthay in midseason form. Averaged 50.9 yards and 4.55 seconds of hang time on 14 punts from own 25. Mason Crosby goes 3-5 on FGs. Missed WR from 39, 44. Good from 34, 34, 44. -- Jason Wilde of ESPN Milwaukee reports that LB coach Kevin Greene has gotten a haircut. The mullet is gone. -- Practice ended after 1 hour, 52 minutes. -- This is one of 3 Packers OTAs open to the public but very few fans are here at Ray Nitschke Field. Maybe 200 at most. ... The only other open practices are May 30 and June 5, weather permitting. -- New Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin and a couple of his assistant coaches are here watching Packers OTA. He knows coach Mike McCarthy and special teams coach Shawn Slocum. Reported by Rob Demovsky, Pete Dougherty, Mike Vandermause and Weston Hodkiewicz
