OTA practice: May 30, 2012

Seen and heard by our reporters at today's open Green Bay Packers practice at Ray Nitschke Field: -- The Packers practiced outside even though it was a cool, dreary, overcast day. It was 56 degrees when practice started. It was drizzling at the beginning of practice. Then it turned to rain. They turned on the lights on the field and kept going. Then the rain stopped. -- WR Donald Driver was in uniform and appeared to be good to go, After practice, coach Mike McCarthy said Driver looked to be in great shape, but added that he would have a limited role in practice this week. -- Other than his comments on Driver and saying backup QB Graham Harrell is doing well, McCarthy didn't comment on specific players. He did say the defense looks more athletic than last year. -- LB Frank Zombo, S Charlie Peprah, FB Jon Hoese, FB John Kuhn still weren't practicing. CB Charles Woodson, T Marshall Newhouse, C Sampson Genus and DE Mike Daniels also didn't practice. Genus appeared to be the only new DNP. He went last week. -- With Newhouse out, Herb Taylor took the first rep at left tackle. M.D. Jennings got the first crack with first-team defense with Peprah out. -- Of course RB Alex Green, TE Andrew Quarless and T Derek Sherrod are still out and likely will be until training camp or beyond. -- No sign of DE Phillip Merling either, but given that he was overweight, perhaps he was inside doing conditioning. -- LB Clay Matthews wasn't working in the first set of team drills. Reason unknown. He was practicing earlier. Erik Walden took his place. Matthews was nowhere to be seen on the field. -- Jamari Lattimore and Brad Jones worked at inside LB. Both were OLBs last year. -- Seventh-round pick Andrew Datko got some rotation at first-team left tackle. -- Rookie OLB Dezman Moses had a sack or near-sack of QB Aaron Rodgers during blitz drill. He's opened some eyes early on. -- CB Davon House said last week he felt he's improved considerably with OTAs. He's had some nice breakups today. And then WR Curenski Gilleylen showed some hops in a reception over House. -- CB Jarrett Bush, going a little hard, knocked down WR Greg Jennings. All good, though. Fist bump followed. -- The Packers signed TE Brandon Bostick, a 6-foot-3, 245-pounder who tried out at rookie camp earlier this month. He's from Newberry College in South Carolina. He'll wear No. 48. The roster is at the 90-player limit. -- There will be one more OTA practice open to the public and the media. That will be next Tuesday, June 5, at 11:30 a.m. After that, there's the mandatory minicamp is June 12-14. That will be the last major event before training camp opens July 26. Reported by Rob Demovsky, Pete Dougherty, Weston Hodkiewicz and Mike Vandermause.
