Driver says Packers didn't sign him as injury insurance

Donald Driver says he's confident he'll be on the Packers' roster this season and that the team didn't work out a new contract with him just for injury insurance at receiver. Driver's renegotiated contract this week undoubtedly includes a cut in pay from the $5 million he was to make this year in salary and bonuses. Today he attended his first organized team activity practice of the offseason after missing last week while winning the finals of the "Dancing with the Stars" competition on television. No details of the contract were available, so it's uncertain whether Driver's new deal contains any guaranteed money -- before the renegotiation, he was scheduled to receive a $1.5 million roster bonus on the first day of training camp. The Packers have four other receivers, all under age 30, who caught more passes than Driver last season, plus two practice-squad receivers (Tori Gurley and Diondre Borel) who appear ready to make a strong push for a roster spot. Last year the team kept five receivers , and chances are it would keep six at the most this season. But the 37-year-old Driver said he doesn't think the Packers will cut him at the end of training camp if all six of the aforementioned receivers are healthy. "I just donít think itís going to happen," Driver said. " I think Iíve meant more to the organization than anything and the organization has meant so much to me. I donít think weíll ever get into a bitter relationship. They donít want that, I donít want that, so I donít think it will ever happen. Itís going to be two sides coming together like we did, and Iím going to retire as a Packer." Driver said he's about at his 194-pound playing weight but that his body fat has dropped from just under 5 percent to about 2 percent because of the extra physical training he did for "Dancing with the Stars." "I feel I got more flexible, thatís the thing I took from it," Driver said. "And the core work was just amazing. Iím glad, Iím glad I did it."
