3 factors attracted Holmgren to Green Bay

Former Packers head coach Mike Holmgren is getting inducted into the Packers Hall of Fame this evening at the Lambeau Field Atrium. Holmgren and his presenter, former Packers GM Ron Wolf, held†a press conference this afternoon. Holmgren said there were three things that made the Packers job attractive.†First and foremost was Wolf, and Holmgren's†high regard for the veteran NFL personnel man. "†I came in and we didnít know each other," said Holmgren. "I knew of him. We might have said hello on the road scouting or something. I really didnít know him but we spent a day together and it wasnít too long before I realized, 'Listen, for a young coach coming into this league, a first-time head coach, I canít do any better. Iíve got the best person to teach me how to do this, to get me my players, to run the organization.' " The second factor that attracted Holmgren was the Green Bay mystique. "I grew up in San Francisco and the 49ers, obviously as a kid that was the team we rooted for," said Holmgren. "But we all knew about Bart Starr, we all knew about Jim Taylor, all the great things in Green Bay, so to be able to be the coach of the Green Bay Packers was really intriguing, something really special." One final factor was the chance to turn a struggling franchise around. "I think I learned something about myself over the years," said Holmgren, "that to try and build something up and be part of a group of men and women coming together and taking something that has been a little broken, fix it and push it in the right direction, that appeals to me."
