When the Green Bay Packers cut 29-year-old Charlie Peprah on the eve of training camp, they in effect endorsed the two young players battling for the open safety position in their nickel and dime defenses.

The Packers already thought they had one standout safety in the making in third-year pro Morgan Burnett. And after a full offseason to study their other young safeties, the Packers decided the superior athleticism of second-year pro M.D. Jennings and fourth-round draft pick Jerron McMillian made Peprah expendable.

So without the smart and experienced Peprah as the fallback, either ...
