Post-practice McCarthy: Newhouse, Greg Jennings have concussions

Both left tackle Marshall Newhouse and wide receiver Greg Jennings suffered concussions during Friday’s Family Night, Packers head coach Mike McCarthy announced after the team’s practice Sunday night. While it was widely assumed Newhouse had some type of ailment after walking off the field alongside team physician, John Gray, with about 10 minutes left in the scrimmage, Jennings’ injury came as more of a surprise. Both players missed Sunday’s practice, but McCarthy wouldn’t go as far to say they’d be scratches from Thursday’s first preseason game against San Diego. "I wouldn't rule Marshall or Greg out this week," McCarthy said. "I know they're going through the protocol. I'll probably know more Tuesday is probably the day where it'll matter most." He did offer that offensive tackle Derek Sherrod (leg) wouldn’t be back in time for the road trip. Eight other veterans were given of from Sunday’s practice, including quarterback Aaron Rodgers, wide receiver Donald Driver and defensive back Charles Woodson. Seventh-year fullback John Kuhn was also excused, but opted to practice after missing most of training camp with a knee injury. Here were some other highlights from Sunday's post-practice news conference: *McCarthy was pleased with how the rookie quarterbacks and reserves stepped in with veteran players taking the night off. *McCarthy said the schedule tweak is something they've also done in the past, felt it was the right move. He has got everything he's wanted to get out of the night practices thus far. *Was happy to get extra reps for Herb Taylor and Andrew Datko at the tackle positions with Newhouse out. Although Taylor hasn't played in an NFL game since 2008, McCarthy credited the personnel department for finding him. *Defensive lineman Mike Daniels (knee, groin) participated in individual and group drills on Sunday, but did not take part in the team portions of practice. Afterward, McCarthy said he's close to being back after sitting out since last Wednesday. *McCarthy had a bumpy airplane ride back to Green Bay form the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday night as they flew through a thunderstorm. Said he had a close relationship with four of the six inductees. *Sunday's practice saw the most amount of scuffles break out this training camp with about four of five different incidents. McCarthy said that didn't concern him as much as the need to clean it up and restore order afterward. *Practice lasted 2 hours, 21 minutes.
