Ted Thompson is breaking form in pursuing an accomplished but declining veteran in Cedric Benson to supplement his injured and underperforming corps of running backs.

The Green Bay Packers' general manager reportedly was on the brink of signing the 29-year old Benson on Saturday. That's just two days after James Starks had a rough outing in his preseason debut as the starting halfback at San Diego. He then added to his already problematic injury history by missing practice Saturday night because of a turf-toe ailment that coach Mike McCarthy said leaves his status as "week-to-week."
