The Packers have made no formal announcement about signing veteran running back Cedric Benson, although various reports over the last day suggest the move is imminent. In the locker room today, Packers running back Alex Green sounded as if the signing was a foregone conclusion. “It definitely adds competition,” Green said when asked about Benson being added to the mix. “We’re bringing a veteran running back. We had a pretty young group. As far as being a leader …it will bring some experience, great guy to learn from, things like that. I think it will be a great asset to the team.” Green was asked if signing Benson was an indication the Packers front office wasn’t pleased with the current crop of backs. “This is a business,” said Green. “Ted (Thompson) does a great job of bringing guys in (to) help this team win a championship. That’s what it’s about. That’s our goal. So you bring in a guy who can help us out, then I’m all for it.” After the media gathering around Green’s locker dissipated, I asked him if someone in the Packers organization had formally told him Benson would be signed. “I haven’t heard anything yet,” said Green. “A fellow teammate told me yesterday that there are reports going around that he might come in, things like that. I haven’t heard anything from the coaches yet. I guess I’ll find out later today in meetings.” There was no sign of Benson in the locker room. The Packers practice at 7 p.m. today at Nitschke Field.
