Packers preparing for early season games

The Packers this week have started working extensively against their scout teams in practice, but the work has been more to get ready for the early regular season than for Thursday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. For the first 10 days or so of camp, almost all the team drills feature the Packers' offense and defense running their own schemes at full speed and often match up the No. 1 offense against the No. 1 defense in highly competitive periods. But when they go to game planning periods later in camp and in the regular season, one side of the ball has backups working off play diagrams of what an opponent would run, so the starters get a look at what the opponent will. Those drills aren't nearly as competitive. McCarthy said the Packers spent much of the last two days working on early season and NFC North Division opponents -- the Packers play division rival Chicago in Week 2 of the regular season on a Thursday night, only four days after their regular-season opener against San Francisco. He said they'll practice for the preseason game against †the Browns starting Monday. "We do the offseason studies on all four opponents the first four games and our division opponents, and always try to take two or three days in training camp and lock into that," McCarthy said. "Itís good for the young guys because they get a sense of what a game-plan meeting looks like and what a game-plan practice looks like, and itís really good for the veterans, it really challenges them mentally to shift gears. Iíve always had a lot of success with that."
