The San Francisco 49ers had a championship defense last season and should again this year.

But to make the jump from a surprise 13-3 team to a Super Bowl participant, they need better than the do-no-harm offense they fielded in 2011. So they put the bulk of their offseason resources into upgrading their talent on that side of the ball.

The 49ers started by jumping into the Peyton Manning free-agency sweepstakes last spring but to no avail. They signed Randy Moss after his one-year retirement from the NFL in hopes he still has some big-play talent left his 35-year-old body; signed Super Bowl hero ...
