House returns but unlikely to play this week

Cornerback Davon House practiced today for the first time since he injured his left shoulder in the preseason opener at San Diego on Aug. 9, but he was extremely limited and appears unlikely to play in Sunday’s opener against the 49ers. He said he didn’t engage at all with any receivers, which means he couldn’t put his shoulder through much of a test. When — or if — he returns, he will have to wear a large brace, similar to what cornerback Tramon Williams played with most of last season. “It sucks; that’s all I can tell you,” Williams said of the brace. “But it keeps you safe. It keeps you in the range of motion and doesn’t let you get outside of your comfort zone. You can’t make certain movements. It only goes so far. You can’t (reach) over your head. It’s basically playing with one arm.” House said the brace is necessary because if he dislocates his shoulder again, he would need season-ending surgery. “He told me every game he played with the sling, he wanted to take it off,” House said. “But I don’t want my shoulder to pop out and be done for the year.” The brace appeared to limit Williams' effectiveness last season. House, the second-year pro, appeared to be on his way to winning a starting job before the injury. Now, it appears Jarrett Bush will start at the right cornerback spot, and Sam Shields likely will play in the dime, or vice versa. House was still holding out hope to play this week, but that seemed unlikely since he hasn’t even gone through a full practice yet. He said he hoped to be able to do some one-on-one work against the receivers tomorrow. “I did a little of that with our (tackling) dummies inside and with some of our training staff, too,” House said. “Of course, it’s totally different than going against Greg (Jennings). They wanted me to go against the receivers today, the training staff did, but that wasn’t in the schedule. Hopefully, tomorrow we’ll do a little bit of individuals and one on ones.”
