Scouting report: Colts' rushing offense

Here is Pete Dougherty's scouting report on the Colts rushing offense based on interviews with NFL coaches and scouts: The Colts’ offensive coordinator, 60-year-old Bruce Arians, is the interim coach. It’s unclear whether he’ll also be the full-time coordinator, which includes play calling. Arians’ offense is based on the system he worked in as an assistant coach with the Pittsburgh Steelers, first as receivers coach from 2004 to 2006 and as coordinator from 2007 to 2011. That system prefers bigger, more physical running backs and a power run game, though the Colts don’t have Steelers-like personnel in their backfield or on the offensive line. The Colts rank No. 21 in the NFL in rushing yards and No. 23 in average per carry (3.7 yards). Their best back is Donald Brown (5-10, 210), a first-round pick (No. 27 overall) in 2009 who’s been decent but no better in his four years. His career average is 4.1 yards a carry, including 3.6 yards on 44 carries this year. He’s better running outside than between the tackles. Rookie Vick Ballard (5-10, 217), a fifth-round pick out of Mississippi State, is a little bigger and more stout, and has 31 yards on 15 carries. Their below-average line will be short-handed with center Samson Satele likely out because of a knee injury.
