Scouting report: Texans' passing offense

Oct. 14, 2012

Here is Pete Dougherty's scouting report of the Houston Texans' passing offense based on interviews with coaches and scouts:

Quarterback Matt Schaub is more of a game manager than playmaker, though heís better than, say, San Franciscoís Alex Smith.

Schaub, 37-32 as Houstonís starter, has great size (6-5, 239) but only OK arm strength and limited mobility. He canít scramble but slides well in the pocket, gets the ball out fast and makes great play-action fakes off Fosterís running. Heís been sacked only three times this season and 16 times in 10 games last year.

Schaub makes good decisions (eight touchdown passes, only two interceptions this season), and his 99.2 passer rating ranks No. 7 in the NFL.

His best receiver, Andre Johnson (6-3, 230), at age 31 and after hamstring surgery last year isnít the freakish athlete he used to be, but heís still one of the gameís top receivers and an imposing, physical target who catches well. He has 17 receptions and a 16.6-yard average (two touchdowns) this season.

Kevin Walter (6-3, 218) is a big possession receiver who has 13 catches for a 13.6-yard average. Tight end Owen Daniels, who played in college at Wisconsin, probably is Schaubís second-favorite target. Heís a slippery route runner with good size (6-3, 249) and great hands, and leads the team with 23 receptions (13.5-yard average).

Duane Brown (6-4, 320) is one of the NFLís top left tackles and probably will be entrusted to block the Packersí Clay Matthews one on one. The Texansí interior offensive line (Myers and guards Wade Smith and Antoine Caldwell) are susceptible to good power rushers.
