Sources: Packers sign Southwest grad Vanderlin to practice squad

Oct. 17, 2012

Drew Vanderlin is getting another shot with the Green Bay Packers.

The former Green Bay Southwest standout signed onto the Packers' practice squad on Wednesday after attending the Packers' rookie orientation on a tryout basis in May, according to his agent Travis Bell and multiple sources with knowledge of the situation.

A 6-foot-3, 280-pound defensive lineman from Michigan Tech, Vanderlin projects as a defensive lineman in the Packersí 3-4 defensive scheme. Vanderlin recorded 64 tackles with 20 sacks and 36 tackles for loss during his six-year career with the NCAA Division II Huskies, including his true redshirt and medical redshirt seasons.

The Packers already had one spot open on their eight-man practice squad after promoting offensive lineman Greg Van Roten to the active roster last Saturday, but had another come available with Indianapolis signing defensive end Lawrence Guy to its active roster on Wednesday, according to Colts owner Jim Irsay's Twitter account.

Most recently, Vanderlin has been working defensive line coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.
