Other than long field goals, Crosby having good season

Oct. 23, 2012

Mason Crosby badly missed a 58-yard field goal attempt against the Rams on Sunday, just like he was way off the mark on a 51-yard field goal attempt against the Colts two weeks ago that would have sent the game into overtime

But the Packers coaching staff doesn’t appear to be concerned about Crosby, who is 8 for 8 on field goals under 50 yards and 1 for 4 on kicks 50 yards and beyond.

“Yeah, the 58-yarder (Sunday) I thought he was out of rhythm and tempo,” said special teams coach Shawn Slocum. “I think it’s indicative and really shows up in what he’s done this year. He’s 100 percent at everything below 50 and we’re 1 out of 4 in kicks above 50. The thing we’ve got to do as we move forward is just keep that same rhythm and tempo into the kick.”

Crosby’s 58-yard attempt sailed well right of the uprights in the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. His miss at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis two weeks ago went far left of the target.

“Well, (they’re) bad kicks, and we have to improve that because the season’s not over,” said Slocum. “We’ll have more opportunities.”

Other than long field goal attempts, Crosby is having a pretty good season. He made his other three field goal attempts against the Rams, including a 48-yarder. He also successfully executed an onside kick attempt in the first half. Plus, Slocum likes the way Crosby is kicking off.
