Morning roundup: Walden makes the most of his 2nd chance

Nov. 2, 2012

One of the unsung heroes on the Packers' defense this season has been outside linebacker Erik Walden.

The Packers drafted Nick Perry in the first round essentially to replace Walden but in Perry's absence due to a knee injury, Walden has played better than ever.

As Wes Hodkiewicz wrote in this story -- http://pck.rs/PqjDy1 -- "although Walden wishes he’d have more than one sack to show for his 362 defensive snaps, he’s steadily improved. He was the defense’s game-ball recipient following 12 tackles in the 30-20 win over St. Louis on Oct. 21 and has yet to miss a tackle."

In other news, Pete Dougherty led his notebook -- http://pck.rs/Ry4XJH -- with an item on how critical it will be for the Packers' running backs to pick up blitzing linebackers on Sunday against Arizona.

Dougherty wrote: "The Packers’ halfbacks will face as difficult a passing-game assignment this week as they’ll see all season trying to pick up the blitzes by Arizona Cardinals inside linebacker Daryl Washington. Washington ranks No. 3 in the NFL in sacks with eight and is most effective when the Cardinals run cross blitzes with their inside linebackers. Paris Lenon, the Cardinals’ other inside linebacker, usually blitzes first, and then Washington shoots for a gap behind him. NFL teams almost always have the center pick up the first linebacker on the cross blitz, which leaves the running back to pick up Washington."
