What was once a cost-saving measure has now become the target of proposed staff cuts at the Oshkosh Fire Department.

In 1999, when the city opened a sixth fire station, the department combined ladder trucks with its normal engine companies so it only needed to hire seven new firefighters, not 12.

To help support the changes in equipment, the department also created a heavy rescue unit, Rescue 15, that carries everything from the Jaws of Life to hazardous materials equipment to extra air tanks. ...
