Rodgers, Matthews earn PFW mid-season all-pro honors

Nov. 6, 2012

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named to the Pro Football Weekly midseason all-pro team (http://tinyurl.com/b2lo7ln).

It’s somewhat of a surprise since many national pundits are listing Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan as the frontrunner for the MVP this season.

Here is what Pro Football Weekly (PFW) said about Rodgers: “The reigning league MVP got off to a slow start, posting a sub-100.0 passer rating in his first three games after doing so only twice in 2011. Still, any critics were silenced when he eviscerated the Texans in Houston with 338 yards and six TDs. Despite missing his top option (Greg Jennings) for most of the season and being sacked 29 times through nine games, Rodgers remains the league’s best player.”

Rodgers has a better passer rating than Ryan (107.4 to 103.0) and more touchdown passes (25 to 17), although he played one more game. Rodgers also has fewer interceptions (5 to 6). Ryan leads Rodgers in completion percentage (68.9% to 67.0%), and the Falcons are 8-0 compared to the Packers' 6-3 record.

PFW also named Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews to its midseason all-pro defensive team.

“After relatively quiet numbers last season, Matthews got off to a torrid start in 2012,” wrote PFW. “He has nine sacks and looks as healthy and as quick as ever, making him a terror rushing from all over the formation. If not for J.J. Watt’s stellar play, Matthews probably would be the front-runner for league defensive MVP honors.”
