The surgery that Packers linebacker Nick Perry had was to repair a ligament injury in his left wrist, a source said.

The surgery took place at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where Perry sought a second opinion on his injury.

The source said it was unlikely that Perry would be able to return this season, although the Packers haven't yet placed him on injured reserve.

Perry first injured his wrist in the season opener against San Francisco. He played with a cast on his wrist until he injured his knee in Week 6 against Houston.

The Packers' first pick in April's draft, Perry had two sacks in six games. He opened the season as the starting left outside linebacker but split time with veteran Erik Walden.

It's the second straight season the Packers' first-round pick has been lost to an injury during his rookie season. Last year, tackle Derek Sherrod sustained a broken leg on Dec. 18 at Kansas City. Sherrod still hasn't returned. The recovery for Perry isn't expected to be anywhere near as long.
