When NFL players went on strike 25 years ago, seeking improvements in free agency and pensions, Green Bay Packers coach Forrest Gregg was philosophical about it all.

"Give me my druthers, I'll take the players that are cleaning out their lockers right now," he said as the strike began in late September 1987. "But that's not the way it is, so I'll coach whoever wears the Green Bay Packers uniform."

For almost a month, Gregg coached a hastily assembled bunch of players who'd been cut from training camps or were free agents off the street. All the while, most of his regular players weren't far away. ...
