The applications came in waves. Even now, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy couldn't guess how many interviews he conducted in those fleeting weeks.

When the running backs coaching position opened up earlier this year, McCarthy and recently promoted offensive coordinator Tom Clements ran through one background check after another in search of their guy.
