Itís likely going to be a couple more weeks until Greg Jennings is able to return after having surgery two weeks ago for a core muscle injury, but the Green Bay Packers wide receiver is already champing at the bit to return.
Jennings has been limited to only four games this season and hasnít played since a catching a 9-yard touchdown pass in the Packersí 28-27 win over New Orleans on Sept. 30 because of a persistent injury originally linked to his groin.
After seeking a second opinion from Philadelphia-based Dr. William Meyers, Jennings had surgery for a rectus abdominal tear on Nov. 1, which should prevent him from running for at least another two weeks.
However, a pain-free Jennings said heís feeling great and was able to sneak a little run in anyway despite his diagnosis.
ďIíve developed an itch,Ē Jennings said on Monday. ďItís like a little kid you let taste a piece of candy. Now you try to feed him vegetables again, itís not really going to happen. Theyíve experienced the candy, they want candy. Iíve experienced working out, now itís like, ĎJust let me go.í My mindset is, I was pretty much ruled out anyway, so letís take the harness off and just go free and see what happens.
Jennings, who has 12 catches for 78 yards and a touchdown this year, was originally scheduled to have surgery for a rectus abdominal tear in Philadelphia on Oct. 30, but was delayed for two days when Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast.
Although Jennings said heís feeling good, he doesnít want to elaborate on his timetable for a return, but itís reasonable to estimate heís still a few more weeks given the three-week diagnosis for when he can return to running full speed set after the surgery.
The one certainty is the 29-year-old Jennings claims to be pain-free, a luxury he hasnít had since he first suffered the injury during the final drive of the season-opener against San Francisco on Sept. 9.
ďI have a target in my own mind. I do,Ē Jennings said. ďItís in my mind; Iím going to keep it right there.
