Is Dominion Resources of Virginia playing political dirty tricks on Kewaunee County and other Northeast Wisconsin voters? Why would Dominion Resources of Virginia choose to announce closure of its Kewaunee Nuclear Plant in Wisconsin two weeks and one day before a national election? Why not on Oct. 1 or Dec. 31? The plant has been for sale for 18 months.
We know 650 employees in the region will lose their jobs. Seventeen percent of the jobs in the county will vanish along with 36 percent of the income earned. County government will lose $780,049 leading to a further cut in services or a 7 percent increase in property taxes. Jobs lost, income lost, increasing taxes all generate fear.
According to OpenSecrets.org, Dominion Resources has made contributions to political candidates in 2012 totaling $671,300. The top two candidates receiving funds from Dominion include Mitt Romney ($69,900) and Eric Cantor, House Majority Leader, R-Va. ($53,750). Reid Ribble, the Republican candidate for the House of Representatives whose district includes Kewaunee County, has received $4,000 from them. Perhaps the when of this announcement has more to do with politics than business? I don't believe in coincidences in politics. Do you?
