When I was a young Catholic lad attending catechism in the '50s we were told that if you took part in any other religions ceremonies other than the Catholic Church's you sinned against God, and only Catholics could get into heaven.
We were once told during the '80s that the church had to raise money for something called the Loma Christy fund and we were asked to pledge $300 over a three-year period. We later found out that the dioceses was being sued by someone who had been molested by a priest and we were unknowingly going to be the defense fund.
When the name Jerry Sandusky comes up we all agree he did a horrible thing, but when clergy do the same thing we all look at our shoes and change the subject.
Why do we allow religion, or even a political party, to scare us with the threat of going to hell, or worse? The bishop's letter to his parishioners is the perfect example that fear is an effective tool and is alive and well in religion and politics. Remember the Republicans telling us they were the only party that could protect us from the Taliban?
