Govenor fails in leadership on health care

Gov. Scott Walker's decision not to set up a state-run health insurance exchange has me perplexed. A professed proponent of states' rights, by his decision he has ceded control of an important program, in a key sector of our economy, to the federal government. His stated reason for his decision is to protect Wisconsin taxpayers from future costs, which he cannot identify.

Under the Affordable Care Act, exchanges will be funded by an assessment on insurance companies and must be self-sufficient. Because there is some risk in getting the exchange set up by 2014 as mandated by the law, the governor has decided to pass on Wisconsin taking control of its own destiny on this important issue.

Over the past four years we have seen opposition to President Barack Obama by some politicians regardless of the consequences to their constituents. By making this decision, it seems to me the governor has chosen "politics as usual" over leadership.
